Basuki Dasgupta

b. 1970, Bishnupur, West Bengal, India

Basuki Dasgupta is a contemporary Indian artist whose practice brings together mythology, folk traditions, and a distinctive textured visual language. Born in Bishnupur, a town known for its terracotta temples, his early exposure to their intricate reliefs and weathered surfaces continues to inform his work. Working in mixed media, he builds layered compositions using paper pulp, acrylic, and other materials, creating richly tactile surfaces that evoke the aged, mural-like quality of temple walls.

Mythology and spirituality form a central thread in his practice, with many works exploring female forms inspired by the symbolism of Shakti. His bold, puppet-like figures—often reinterpreting divine forms such as Durga—are rendered in earthy tones punctuated with striking accents of colour. Alongside these, Dasgupta also explores more abstract compositions, including forest-inspired works and geometric forms, where texture, rhythm, and surface take precedence over narrative. Across both, his work remains rooted in materiality, combining a strong graphic presence with a deeply tactile sensibility.
