Madhuri Kathe

b. 1972, Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, India

Madhuri Kathe’s work explores abstraction through a layered and tactile mixed-media practice inspired by nature and quiet introspection. She builds textured surfaces using materials such as medical gauze, handmade papers, and delicate fabric layers, allowing organic forms and subtle irregularities to emerge within the composition. Her process is deeply material-driven, often involving unconventional tools such as incense sticks, which create fine burn marks and subtle traces that lend depth and character to the surface.

Her palette is shaped by close observation of natural environments and was further influenced by an art residency in Sweden in 2018. The vast, open landscapes, diffused light, and stillness of her surroundings informed a quieter visual language—one that embraces restraint, softness, and a sense of spatial openness. Rather than depicting nature directly, her compositions suggest its rhythms through layered textures, gentle tonal shifts, and areas of pause. Moving between control and spontaneity, her work offers a meditative visual experience, often evoking calm, balance, and quiet reflection.
