Purnendu Mandal

b. 1980, Malda, West Bengal, India

Purnendu Mandal’s practice centres on the shifting rhythms of urban life, explored through layered oil on canvas cityscapes of Mumbai, Kolkata, and Varanasi. His works are often rooted in transient moments such as rain-soaked streets, dense intersections, or the quiet movement of everyday life, where light, reflection, and human presence dissolve into the surrounding architecture. Working with a palette knife, he builds and disrupts the painted surface simultaneously, scraping, scoring, and etching into wet paint to create a network of fine, intersecting lines that animate the composition.

Rather than rendering a precise view, Mandal constructs an atmosphere where structure and movement coexist. His textured surfaces allow forms to emerge and recede, suggesting cities that are constantly in flux. Through this approach, his works capture the complexity of urban spaces without fixing them into a single, defined moment.
